Where UPLIFT'D Began

Uplift Darvin

A project. A person. The origin of everything.

Who Is Darvin

A young man who deserved more.

Darvin is a young man from the Dominican Republic with a disability. He is curious, determined, and full of potential — the kind of person who, given the right support, can do remarkable things.

He is also Johileny's brother. And watching him navigate a system that consistently underestimated him — that created barriers where there should have been pathways — became the catalyst for everything UPLIFT'D is today.

The Barriers He Faced

The system wasn't built for him.

Darvin faced barriers that are familiar to disabled youth everywhere: limited access to appropriate educational support, few pathways to meaningful employment, and a near-total absence of mentorship from disabled adults who had navigated similar challenges.

These weren't personal failures. They were structural ones. The systems that should have supported him — educational, vocational, social — were not designed with him in mind.

The Project

What we set out to do.

Uplift Darvin began as a direct intervention: a focused effort to identify the specific barriers Darvin was facing and connect him with the resources, relationships, and opportunities that could help him move forward.

The project brought together a small team committed to doing the work of navigation — researching programs, making connections, advocating within systems, and building a support network around one young man.

Supports Provided

  • Educational navigation and advocacy
  • Vocational exploration and career pathway research
  • Connection to disability-led organizations and communities
  • Mentorship and peer connection
  • Family support and systems navigation

What We Learned

One person's story revealed a systemic gap.

What we learned from Uplift Darvin was not unique to Darvin. The barriers he faced — the absence of accessible pathways, the lack of disabled mentors, the complexity of navigating systems without support — were the same barriers facing disabled youth everywhere.

We also learned that when someone is willing to do the work of navigation alongside a young person, things change. Doors open. Possibilities expand. The problem was never the person. It was the absence of support.

How It Shaped UPLIFT'D

From one project to an organization.

Uplift Darvin became the proof of concept for UPLIFT'D. Every program we've built — inquiry and referral, college support, career development, mentorship, leadership, global access — grew directly from what we learned in that first project.

Darvin's story gave us our mission. His barriers gave us our programs. His potential gave us our belief that this work matters.

What It Means Today

Darvin is not a symbol. He is a person. And this organization exists because he deserved better — and so does every disabled young person who comes after him.

UPLIFT'D carries Darvin's story not as a marketing narrative, but as an organizational commitment: to do for every disabled young person what we set out to do for him.

We are proof of origin. We know where we came from. And we know why this work matters.
